As Rebekkah and her siblings, all musicians, gathered around their father on his deathbed, they revisited many of the songs he himself had recorded in his career. As a tribute, they offered each to choose a song and re-record it in their own style. He happily accepted.
Rebekkah chose "Ain't It Sad," a song she fondly recalled him singing when she was a young child traveling with his band during summer break. She updated a few of the words and changed the key to make it her own while still honoring the original.
During production, Rebekkah was delighted to discover that Steve Corey, one of her father's bandmates on the original song, has long been friends with Lonnie Park, the mix and mastering engineer for this album. You'll hear Stevie singing backing vocals on this song, bringing things full circle.
lyrics
Did you come along talkin’ fancy,
Take your wine and take your dancin’?
I’ve played the game many times myself.
All the schemes and all the plans
Aren’t so hard to understand;
Wind ‘em up and leave them on a shelf.
Well I'll lie to you if you’ll lie to me,
‘Cause anything’s better than the truth,
The ostrich hides its head in the sand.
While we waste our lives in covering,
A part of us is smothering;
It’s easier to run than make a stand.
You say there’s a part of you inside
You naturally just have to hide;
I don’t know but I’d just be confused.
We pay for love with so much pain,
We pay for sunshine with the rain;
Ain’t it sad how we pay our dues.
(Bridge)
But if I’m right,
We are all light,
And I’m a mirror for my brother.
Can’t you see,
We reflect each other.
I don’t have to lie,
You don’t have to cry,
We really don’t have to act at all.
I know there’s a light in me,
And it shines so bright in you;
Can’t you see the shadows on the wall?
Well, every child leaves a spark,
Every fire lights the dark;
We live our lives exactly as we choose.
And the moral of the story is
That life is so much more than this;
I wish that we could win and never lose.
Ain’t it sad how we pay our dues.
And the moral of the story is
That life is so much more than this;
I wish that we could win and never lose.
Ain’t it sad how we pay our dues.
